TeraGrid Planning Process - Steering Committee Charge

The TeraGrid Planning Process Steering Committee will develop and provide a report to stakeholders that identifies options for the definition, design, and implementation of the next generation of the NSF TeraGrid program over the time frame 2010-2015. The committee will consider the results of a series of planning workshops (sponsored by NSF and carried out by the University of Michigan), program documentation, and presentations by TeraGrid users, TeraGrid participants, NSF program officials, and other thoughtful observers as it develops its report. The committee may also arrange a series of additional meetings and/or workshops to obtain more information. The goal is to provide a preliminary report to the PI for the planning grant and a draft for public comment by May, 2008.

The report will include a series of findings and discussion and evaluation of options for evolving the TeraGrid beyond 2010. Critical issues to be considered include:

  • Key lessons learned in initial stages of the TeraGrid implementation
  • Purpose, goals, and objectives for follow-on activities
  • Technical Architecture
  • Extensibility, scalability, criteria for inclusion, and boundaries
  • User support and services
  • Governance, including the appropriate role for users in decision-making
  • Modes of NSF support
  • Relation to and coordination with other cyberinfrastructure efforts, both nationally and internationally
  • Appropriate balance between operations and R&D
